GENERAL INFORMATION

Upon completion of the undergraduate program, a student must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) in order to become a licensed registered nurse in California.  The SJSU School of Nursing is committed to providing excellence in nursing education.  As part of that commitment, one of our goals is to have all B.S. nursing graduates successfully complete the NCLEX-RN exam on their first attempt.  San Jose State University School of Nursing, along with the majority of other CSU nursing programs, has selected the ATI-CARP to be part of the undergraduate curriculum.  ATI’s professionally developed nursing exams assess student comprehension and provide nurse educators the opportunity to evaluate student knowledge in relation to the nursing process, critical thinking, and competency skills.  ATI is designed to assist faculty in preparing students for success throughout the program and in taking the NCLEX-RN exam.

In preparation for taking the NCLEX-RN exam, students will be participating in ATI’s Comprehensive Assessment & Review Program (CARP). Throughout the nursing program and at the beginning of each semester, ATI registered students will receive information about resources and registration.  Each semester, in specific courses, exams will be administered.  One to five percent of a student’s final grade in the course is assigned to the ATI exams.  CARP is progressive and sequential.  The program, along with course studies, will prepare students in the areas of critical thinking, pharmacology, fundamentals, adult medical-surgical, maternal-newborn, nursing care of children, mental and community health nursing, and leadership.  Lastly, prior to graduation, ATI provides students with the opportunity to take a practice NCLEX exam called, “ATI-NCLEX-RN Outcome Predictor Exam.  This exam and all other previous resources help students identify strengths and weaknesses, provide remediation, and further support their successful completion of nursing program and in taking the NCLEX.

WHAT IS THE COST TO YOU?

Beginning in Fall 07, individual ATI test fees will no longer be part of registration fees; students pay ATI directly each semester on the Web.  As students progress in the program different content, assessment, resources, and evaluation tools will be used.  Fees listed below must be paid before a designated due date; a late fee will be added after the due date.  If students have emergency financial issues--$$$ is available as an emergency loan—Contact Dr. K. Abriam-Yago at abriam@son.sjsu.edu.
